The Best of Bali!

When we lived in Sydney, we decided to explore a new world called Bali, Indonesia. I had wanted to go there for a long time, perhaps because I love the movie Eat, Pray, Love, or also because of the mysticism and typical culture. We did some research, talked to friends who had already gone there and we felt prepared for another adventure.

Bali was unlike anything I imagined. We went in the rainy season, between January and February, which is more or less like this: the rain comes, washes everything, goes away, the sun comes, along with hot and muggy air. :)

When we arrived at the airport, almost midnight, we already had a responsible (and very nice) person to pick us up and take us to the first hotel. This first contact with the traffic there was surreal, but it is part of their daily lives. Many motorcycles, but despite a large number of vehicles, they were all driving calmly, even without the "organization" we are used to.

Our first "home" was in Ubud, central Bali, where you find several restaurants, shops, sights, and easy access to many places on the island.

We spent 14 days traveling through Bali, every 2 - 4 days sleeping in a different location.

Gold Tips:

* Bring light and comfortable clothes. But don't overload your suitcase or backpack, because you can buy there many beautiful clothes, and perfect for the local temperature.

* I highly recommend you to book hostels in different regions of the island. We booked the hotels and Airbnbs according to what we were feeling in the places, and it was a great idea. We received tips from local residents and moved to different regions. If this is a good type of trip for you, I recommend it.

* Airbnb is widely used and you will find divine places to spend your nights.

How to get there / When to go

Bali has an international airport in the Denpasar region. At the airport, there will be many people offering transfer services. When we were there, Uber was not well accepted, but it may be better now ... When we asked for an Uber, we had to walk to a "safe" place for the driver to find us. But ok, it always worked.

The seasons are defined between the rainy season (from October to April) and the dry season (from May to September). The temperature does not vary much, it will be mostly hot and you can enjoy the beaches regardless of the season.

The high season is between July and August, at Easter and Christmas and New Year. We went there during the low season. Pro: the island is empty. Cons: a lot of rain. According to what they say, the best time to go to Bali is April, May, June, and September.

What to do

Probably two things you will do most in Bali: visit beaches and temples. The island is incredible, full of traditions, with a religious air and very unconventional. The food is very tasty, with very good prices and healthy options, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Gold Tips:

** Bali has several charming cafes (in the best tropical style). What I most recommend is Bali Buda (@balibuda). Honestly, everything here is incredible. Just give it a try.

* Nasi and Mie Goreng are typical dishes. They are rice (Nasi) or pasta (Mie) with many vegetables, spices, flavors, and vegetarian, vegan, or meat options. Everywhere offers and it is a must-try: delicious and super cheap, even converting to the dollar.

* Take a moment to have a typical Balinese breakfast. They eat real food for breakfast, with unique flavors. Walking through the streets you can identify or ask for a local breakfast.

* Fruits !! They are magnificent and sweet. Be sure to include it in your meals!

* Drink a lot of water, but not from the tap. We received this tip from a friend and followed it. The water there has a slightly different aspect, it is worth the tip.

Here are some of the main points of the Island. There are many places and you can learn a lot about the local culture. It is worth knowing as much as you can!

Going to Bali? Here are some places to visit!

Consider renting a scooter and exploring the island by motorcycle (car is not a good option !!) or accepting one of the numerous transfer proposals you receive while walking the streets.

Balinese people are very helpful and whether on the street or at the hotel, they will always ask if you need any help or where you are going. It may seem strange at first, but it's just their way of helping with your island experience.

What to bring / What to expect from there

Light clothes!! The air in Bali is very humid (including for us Brazilians). There are no cold times, but in the rainy season, taking a comfortable shoe to walk through the wet and confusing streets is highly recommended.

There are numerous exchange offices on the island. Some places accept dollars, but exchanging and having the local currency (Rupee) with you makes it easier to pay without needing to convert every value.

Where to go next?

Bali is an island very different from anything you can expect. It will depend on your mood. For some, it may seem confusing. For others, it is synonymous with tranquility and peace, because of the daily religious rituals or because of the beautiful nature.

Above all, when you'll decide to take this adventure, go with an open mind and heart to discover a culture and a reality that only Bali can offer! In addition to the local beauties, talking to the locals will open your mind and you will surely be enchanted by the serenity and kindness of all of them.

If Bali is on your wish list or if you want to share some experience you had there, write your doubts and/or suggestions here in the comments, and let's talk more!
