Baked Tofu with Shoyu/Tamari Sauce

Tofu is made from soybeans. Some people call it "soy cheese". But honestly, no cheese compares to tofu! In addition to being tasty and versatile, it also protects our body like almost no other food!

Why are you going to love this recipe?

Tofu is a food usually either loved or hated. Sorry for the second word, but that's actually the case. But what I always say is: if you don't like tofu, it's only because you haven't tasted the right tofu yet!

In addition, soy foods have amazing action on our body, mainly reducing any excess estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone and is naturally produced by us, animals. However, through food (mainly derived from other animals), we can overload the body with this hormone, causing a serious increase in the risks, especially of breast and prostate cancer.

Now, a super reason to include not only tofu but soy sauce, tempeh, soy milk in your diet!

We can prepare this recipe and store the roasted tofu in a closed jar in the refrigerator. It is delicious as an accompaniment to pasta, buddha bowls, salads, and wraps, in addition to being the source of protein in the meal!

Tips for following the recipe

This white block known as tofu is made from soybeans plus water. When we buy a package, the tofu is bathed in water, which is natural.

Here is the first secret for good preparation: remove the tofu from the package, drain the water, roll the tofu with a dish towel, then place it on a plate and keep some books or heavy materials on top of the rolled tofu. When we do this process for about 10 minutes, the excess water will come out and the tofu will manage to become crispier and more seasoned.

Speaking of spices, one more secret. They are the key to flavor! Tofu itself doesn't have a strong flavor and the seasoning makes the difference! Regardless of the way of preparation, whether roasted or in the frying pan, the chosen spices will be wild! Use and abuse of herbs and condiments! (and if you find an amazing combination, share it here with us ;)

Baked Tofu with Shoyu/Tamari Sauce

Prep time

20 min

Cooking time

40 min

Ingredients

1 tofu extra firm

2 tbsp agave or maple syrup

4 tbsp shoyu or tamari

2 - 3 garlic cloves, chopped

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp smoked paprika

Pepper sauce to taste (optional)

Method

1. Press the tofu block to drain any extra liquid (as mentioned above under 'Tips for following the recipe').

2. With the tofu block already dry, cut into cubes.

3. In a large bowl, add all the ingredients for the sauce. Leave the tofu for last.

4. Mix all the sauce ingredients with a fork, then add the tofu cubes.

5. Mix well until all the sauce has incorporated into the tofu cubes.

6. Important point: marinate for about 10 minutes. The longer it marinates, the more flavor it will have.

7. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 180°C.

8. Place all tofu cubes on the baking sheet. If any sauce remains in the bowl, carefully pour over the pieces.

9. Bake for approximately 35 - 40 minutes. Turn the pieces over in half the time.

10. Allow it to cool a little and serve as an accompaniment or store in a closed jar in the refrigerator.

** Oven time may vary. It is advisable to stay close to the oven during the process to prevent it from burning if your oven is more powerful.
